Suu Kyi 'guest' lands in Thailand The US man jailed for visiting Burma's detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been released and deported. John Yettaw, whose health is described as fragile, left Burma on a plane with visiting US Senator Jim Webb, who negotiated the deal on Saturday. Mr Webb was the most senior US official to meet the Burmese leader. He also met pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Mr Yettaw was jailed for seven years over the visit and Ms Suu Kyi was given an additional 18 months' house arrest. Mr Yettaw flew with Senator Webb to Bangkok, where he was taken to hospital in a US embassy van. Senator Webb told reporters Mr Yettaw, who is in his mid-60s, was "not a well man". "He had a medical incident this morning when they read him his orders of deportation," the senator told reporters at Bangkok airport. "He's now undergoing a thorough medical review here in a hospital, and soon he will be able to return to his family." His wife, Betty, told the BBC on Saturday she was happy to hear the "wonderful" news that he would be released. 'Sent by God' Senator Webb thanked the Burmese authorities for releasing Mr Yettaw."I am not going to apologise for the actions that he took but I believe that it was a good gesture from your government to our country to allow him to return home to his family for humanitarian reasons," he said at Rangoon airport shortly before his departure. However, Burmese dissidents say Senator Webb's trip could be seen as an endorsement of the poor treatment received by Ms Suu Kyi and more than 2,000 other political prisoners. After his arrest, Mr Yettaw, said he had been sent by God to deliver a warning to Ms Suu Kyi that she would be assassinated. Senator Webb said he had asked Burmese leaders to consider the release of Ms Suu Kyi and allow her to participate in the political process ahead of next year's elections, but that they had not yet responded. Later he met the pro-democracy leader for talks lasting about 40 minutes. She was taken to a state guesthouse near her home to meet Senator Webb. Senator Webb met Ms Suu Kyi after talks with Burma's military leader Ms Suu Kyi went on trial in May after Mr Yettaw swam to her lakeside home with homemade flippers, evading guards. She was charged with breaking the terms of her house arrest by sheltering Mr Yettaw and, after many delays, was sentenced on Tuesday to three years in prison.
Although the sentence was commuted to 18 months' house arrest by Than Shwe, it ensures the opposition leader cannot take part in planned elections next year. Ms Suu Kyi, 64, has spent 14 of the past 20 years under house arrest. Senator Webb, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on East Asia and Pacific affairs, has previously called for more "constructive" US engagement with Burma. He said in July that the trial of Ms Suu Kyi would make this difficult. The UN Security Council expressed "serious concern" following Ms Suu Kyi's conviction earlier this week and urged the release of all political prisoners, while the EU extended sanctions against Burma. But Burma's neighbour China said the world should respect its laws. Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who is the current chairman of the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) told the BBC that imposing sanctions could lead to problems and that it was important to take a balanced approach to dealing with Burma. |

Burma deports Suu Kyi US 'guest'
Islamist fighters buried in Gaza
Palestinian families have held funerals for at least a dozen fighters from a pro-al-Qaeda group killed in a battle with Hamas, the de facto rulers of the Gaza Strip. The funerals took place early on Sunday morning, with Hamas security forces keeping the public away from the burials. At least 28 people have been killed since violence erupted in Rafah between Hamas and the little-known Salafist group Jund Ansar Allah, or Soldiers of the Supporters of God. The fighting began after Abdel-Latif Moussa, the group's leader, proclaimed "the creation of an Islamic emirate in the Gaza Strip" during a sermon on Friday. He reportedly called for the territory to be governed purely by sharia, or Islamic law. Mosque attacked Moussa was killed in the fighting, apparently blowing himself up. Hamas officials said one of his sons was also killed, along with an aide named Khaled Banat, known as Abu Mohammed al-Mujahir, a Syrian who they said was of Palestinian origin.Hamas said six of its fighters and six civilians, including an 11-year-old girl, were among the dead. Over 100 people were injured in the fighting. Residents said the Ibn Taymea mosque where Moussa preached on Friday to a hundred or so supporters, some armed and dressed like Taliban fighters, was hit by grenades and Moussa's house destroyed. The violence in Rafah was the most serious inter-factional Palestinian fighting in the territory since Hamas seized power two years ago, pushing out the Fatah party of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president. But in exerting its control on the Strip and battling the group, Palestinian analysts said Hamas was also demonstrating to the West its willingness to suppress radical groups. Hamas is considered a "terrorist" organisation by the US and most Western powers shun the group, which won a parliamentary election in 2006. 'Extremist' groups Jund Ansar Allah is one of several small groups in Gaza to espouse al-Qaeda sympathies. "A number of these extremist groups have flourished over the Gaza Strip over the past two years," Mkhaimer Abusada, a professor of political science at Gaza's Al-Azhar university, told Al Jazeera. "Some extremist Palestinian Muslim groups do not see Hamas as representing Islam, and they are calling on Hamas to represent Islam or they will take matters into their own hands as we saw in the past two days." Several Rafah residents also voiced disquiet at the Hamas response and said they fear reprisals. "It is wrong for anyone to take the law into their own hands and impose Islamic law," one man, who gave his name as Ali, said by telephone. "But even so, people shouldn't be killed like this. I don't think this is the end. The fundamentalists will hit back." Jund Ansar Allah first made its presence known with a border raid against an Israeli base in June, when some of its fighters rode into battle on horseback. |

Taliban threatens Afghan voters
The Taliban in Afghanistan has threatened to cut off voters' fingers and attack polling stations in its bid to force Afghans to boycott the presidential elections. The threats on Sunday were made in leaflets pinned up and left on the ground in villages in southern Afghanistan. One of the so-called "night letters", threatened that the Taliban would cut off the noses and ears of those who vote on Thursday. Fingers stained with ink, the sign of having cast a vote, will also be hacked off, the warning said. Another leaflet, in Kandahar city, said: "This is to inform respected residents that you must not participate in the elections so as not to become a victim of our operations, because we will use new tactics." The threats came as hospital sources in Kandahar said one person was killed and another eight injured on Sunday after three mortars were fired into the centre of the city. The attack happened not far from a pro-Karzai rally in the city's main sports stadium. Taliban threat Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, confirmed the threatening leaflets were authentic and that commanders were ordering a boycott of the vote. "We are using new tactics targeting election centres... We will accelerate our activities on election day and the day before," he said.Later, a rocket attack in the southern province wounded two children working in a shop in Kandahar city. The leaflets, which mark the first direct Taliban threat to attack polling sites, follow a suicide blast in Kabul. At least eight people were killed in the attack, just outside the headquarters of Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) in the Afghan capital on Saturday. Nick Clarke, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Kabul, said: "It's just four days until Afghanistan's presidential elections, and I can tell you things are very much on edge here." The Taliban has upped its offensive ahead of the country's elections, due on August 20. Election officials have said fears of violence could prevent hundreds of polling stations from opening and that voting was unlikely in nine of the 365 districts. Live debate Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan, took part in a live television debate with two of his main rivals on Sunday. Karzai, considered the frontrunner, took to the stage with Ramazan Bashardost, an independent candidate, and Ashraf Ghani, the former finance minister. Abdullah Abdullah, the former foreign minister, pulled out of the debate, which was aired on state broadcaster Radio and Television Afghanistan (RTA), an announcer said.
"If he is re-elected, he said he was going to make some big changes and the most significant points concerned foreign forces. "He said that there will be no military operations by international forces if they were not first permitted by Afghans. "He said he would not allow international forces to search Afghan homes. And he said he didn't want any Afghans in the future to be held in jails run by foreigners. "So that means that controversial prison base at Baghram airport - which lots of human rights organisations have been talking about - will have to close." A good turnout in Thursday's presidential election will be crucial for the vote to be considered legitimate. |
Obama attacks insurance premiums
US President Barack Obama has stepped up his drive for healthcare reform, attacking excessive premiums charged by insurance companies. Speaking in Colorado, Mr Obama said that under his plan companies would not be allowed to charge exorbitant fees nor place arbitrary limits on coverage. Mr Obama is making a series of "town-hall" speeches to back his campaign. Extending coverage to the millions of Americans who lack health insurance is Mr Obama's top priority for 2009. His reform plan is currently under debate in the US Congress. Some 46 million people in America currently do not have health insurance, and rising healthcare costs are a major contributing factor to America's spiralling budget deficit. 'No silver bullet' Mr Obama said insurance companies had to be held accountable for practices that had led to premiums nearly doubling for the average American family over the past few years. He said: "We're going to ban arbitrary caps on benefits. We'll place limits on how much you can charge on out-of-pocket expenses. No-one in America should go broke because they get sick." Mr Obama admitted there was "no perfect painless silver bullet out there that solves every problem, gives everybody healthcare for free". But he said he had "a lot of really smart people around me who've been working on this for months now". Mr Obama also accused his political opponents of using scare tactics in their campaign against the reform. He added: "I need you to stand for hope. I need you to knock on doors. I need you to spread the word. Because we are going to get this done this year." There remains serious disagreement in the US about how to go about reforming the healthcare system. Democrats in the House of Representatives have reportedly reached a deal on a bill that would mandate all Americans to take out health insurance, with subsidies for the less well-off paid for by a tax on families earning over $350,000 a year. But in the Senate negotiations have stalled, with moderate senators expressing opposition to both the tax and the public plan proposed by the House. Both chambers need to agree on a bill before it can become law.
Row over Afghan wife-starving law
An Afghan bill allowing a husband to starve his wife if she refuses to have sex has been published in the official gazette and become law. The original bill caused outrage earlier this year, forcing Afghan President Hamid Karzai to withdraw it. But critics say the amended version of the law remains highly repressive. They accuse Mr Karzai of selling out Afghan women for the sake of conservative Shia support at next week's presidential election. The law governs family life for Afghanistan's Shia minority. Sexual demands The original version obliged Shia women to have sex with their husbands every four days at a minimum, and it effectively condoned rape by removing the need for consent to sex within marriage.
Western leaders and Afghan women's groups were united in condemning an apparent reversal of key freedoms won by women after the fall of the Taliban. Now an amended version of the same bill has passed quietly into law with the apparent approval of President Karzai. Just ahead of this Thursday's Afghan presidential election, human rights groups suggest the timing is no accident. "There was a review process - Karzai came under huge pressure from all over the world to amend this law, but many of the most oppressive laws remain," Rachel Reid, the Human Rights Watch representative in Kabul, told the BBC. "What matters more to Karzai is the support of fundamentalists and hardliners here in Afghanistan whose support he thinks he needs in the elections." Women's groups say its new wording still violates the principle of equality that is enshrined in their constitution. It allows a man to withhold food from his wife if she refuses his sexual demands; a woman must get her husband's permission to work; and fathers and grandfathers are given exclusive custody of children.
Japan economy set to show growth
Japan's economy is tipped to show growth for the three months to June, after showing four consecutive quarter-on-quarter contractions. Analysts predict growth of 1% during the quarter, after shrinkage of 3.8% in the previous three-month period. The data, released on Monday, could mean the recession is over in Japan. Recent figures have shown other nations are also coming out of the recession, including Germany, France and Hong Kong, a sign the slowdown is easing. Not worsening Japan is heavily reliant on its exports so growth overseas could bode well for its recovery. But while the worst might be over, the pace and depth of the recovery will rely on whether Asia can be a "true engine of global growth", wrote the Bank of England's Andrew Sentance said in the Sunday Times. Mr Sentance, who is part of the bank's rate-setting monetary policy committee, said consumer demand from Asian nations would have to increase to boost growth. Japan's economy - like other Asian nations - is heavily reliant on exports. The slowdown in the US has hit it hard as American consumers have limited their spending. China's government has made a point of saying that recovery will have to be based on domestic demand. "The prospects for global recovery depend on whether Asia can become a true engine of global growth, not simply by meeting demand originating in America and Europe but propelled by consumer spending and investment in this key region," wrote Mr Sentance. In a recent Bank of Japan report, the central bank underlined its cautious view of the economy. While it said conditions in the world's second-largest economy had stopped worsening, it warned that unemployment would stay high and consumer spending low. Last month, the bank forecast that Japan's economy would shrink by 3.4% in the 12 months to 31 March 2010. Beating forecasts The French and German economies both grew by 0.3% between April and June, bringing to an end recessions in Europe's largest economies that have lasted a year. Analysts had not expected the data, suggesting recovery could be faster than previously expected. And Hong Kong recorded growth of 3.3% in the three months from April to June. That data was also better than had been expected, with the government subsequently increasing its forecast for growth in the whole year.
