May 15: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to “immediately” drop proceedings under the National Security Act (NSA) against the BJP leader, Mr Varun Gandhi.
The Mayawati government had charged Mr Gandhi under the NSA for alleged hate speeches in Pilibhit. Mr Gandhi was on parole granted by the Supreme Court, due to expire Thursday evening.
The UP government revoked its detention order against Mr Gandhi following the Supreme Court’s direction.
The BJP welcomed the court order, saying it proved that the NSA had been invokes as an “act of vendetta” by the BSP and the Congress.
The VHP said the court order was a “slap in the face” of the UP government and “the so-called secular leaders of the country.”
A bench headed by the Chief Justice, Mr K.G. Balakrishnan, took strong exception to the Uttar Pradesh government challenging the state advisory board’s recommendation on the grou-nds that the Pilibhit district magistrate (DM) had not been heard by it, and noted that the additional DM had appe-ared before the board.
