Five men have been found guilty in Sydney, Australia, of conspiring to commit terrorist attacks. A jury deliberated for 23 days before convicting them on charges including possessing chemicals for explosives and instructions to make bombs. The maximum sentence for the offences is life in prison. Prosecutors said the men were arrested in raids on their homes in 2005 and planned to commit violence to alter Australia's policy on the Middle East. There were angry scenes outside the specially designed court in Parramatta as supporters of the convicted men scuffled with members of the press. Paramilitary camp The trial began in November 2008 and lasted more than 170 days. Prosecutor Richard Maidment told the jury the defendants were planning to commit "extreme violence" to try to change Australian foreign policy. Mr Maidment had said: "They were motivated to pursue what they probably saw as a religious cause, that is that of jihad." The specific targets of attack were not revealed. The names of the man cannot be given for legal reasons. They showed little emotion on hearing the verdict and were remanded in custody to reappear on 14 December. The raids on the homes yielded terror-related material, prosecutors said. The BBC's Nick Bryant in Sydney says the men were arrested four years ago, following tip offs from hardware store and gun shop owners, whose suspicions were raised when the men started to order unusually high amounts of chemicals and guns. Prosecutors said one defendant had attended a training camp in Pakistan of the Lashkar-e-Taiba group and had set up a paramilitary style camp in rural New South Wales to train three of the other men. Justice Anthony Whealy praised the jury for their diligence and integrity. |

RIYADH: Criminals who break Internet laws could face 12-month jail sentences, fines of around SR50,000, or both, said Soroor Mohammad Al-Abdulwahab of the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution (BIPP). Al-Abdulwahab made the comments while delivering a paper at a three-day conference on combating cybercrime. The event, which is being held at Riyadh’s Al-Faisalia Hotel and which ended on Wednesday, was organized by BIPP in cooperation with Naif Arab University for Security Sciences. Al-Abdulwahab said the above punishments could be increased if the crime is committed by an organized gang, or if a perpetrator abuses his authority or influence in corrupting minors. Al-Abdulwahab also detailed 16 articles of a law created by Royal Decree over two years ago to combat online crime. These articles include the listening or accessing of illegal material by e-mail or via a website, using the net to threaten or blackmail someone, invasion of privacy, defamation, theft, Internet hacking, and distribution of pornography, terrorism-related material and data that could adversely affect the Kingdom’s security or economy. He also said that the authorities need to uphold suspects’ human dignity when arresting them, and not to physically or morally harm them, adding that people arrested should be given the right to contact a lawyer and told why they are being arrested. Meanwhile, Dr. Ibrahim Abdullah Al-Howaimel, deputy president of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, said that, according to the commission’s experience, mixed-working environment is the cause of most cases of women being blackmailed, and that this is one of the negative effects of the Internet. Runar Dominic from the French Ministry of Interior talked about computer- related crimes on the second day of the forum. Dr. Mohamed Abdul Karim Abdullah, an international expert and legal adviser to the United Nations, talked about the use of computers in money laundering. The third session on the second day included a lecture by Patrick Carney, entitled “Information Crimes Worldwide”. Syed Noor Al-Hussein from Pakistan’s Ministry of Defense shed light on “international experience in combating computer-related crimes.” — With input from Rodolfo Estimo Jr. |

Film and video productions are effective ways to approach womens issues, as they engage people emotionally and critically. They are not dry like lectures and workshops and they reach audiences from diverse social, economic and educational backgrounds. Unlike lectures or workshops people are not afraid of appearing ignorant if they say the wrong thing, for everyone can have an opinion about a film. Films and videos are a unique and effective way of approaching womens issues and educating about womens lives by emotionally involving audiences in the discussion of these issues.

Swiss-based miner Xstrata has announced that it has "no intention" of making an offer for rival Anglo-American. In June, Xstrata approached its rival with a view to a merger, but Anglo-American rejected the proposal. At the beginning of this month, the miner was ordered to make an official offer for Anglo by 20 October by the UK's Takeover Panel. Xstrata's chief executive said the company would "assess a range of alternative growth options" instead. Cost savings "It is regrettable that [Anglo] immediately rejected our approach, without engaging with Xstrata to investigate the potential to create more value than either company could do alone," said Mick Davis, boss of the Swiss miner. But he reaffirmed his belief that a merger would be beneficial for both parties. "The compelling strategic rationale for a merger remains undiminished." He said a merger would result in savings of $1bn (£622m) a year after three years. "Cost savings measures by either company alone simply cannot realise this value, nor deliver the associated strategic benefits," he added. Falling demand Xstrata had originally claimed a union "of equals" between the two companies was "highly compelling". However, Anglo dismissed its rival's approach as "totally unacceptable" and "lacking strategic merit". Mining firms have been hit by falling demand for metals amid the downturn. They have also had problems raising cash because of the credit crunch, which last year led Xstrata to abandon its £5bn bid for its rival Lonmin. Earlier this year, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton agreed a joint venture - a deal struck after Rio scrapped a planned tie-up with Chinalco, a state-controlled Chinese company. |
Gunmen have attacked law enforcement buildings in Pakistan, with at least 18 people reported killed in Lahore and eight in a suicide bombing elsewhere. The highest-profile target in Lahore was the Federal Investigation Agency offices. There were also co-ordinated attacks on two police academies. Meanwhile, in the north-western town of Kohat, a suicide bomber rammed his car into a police station, killing eight. There has been an upsurge in violence in Pakistan in recent weeks. Lahore itself was long spared Pakistan's militant violence, but there have been a number of attacks in the city since the start of the year. Belt recovered Four gunmen attacked the Federal Investigation Agency building (FIA) in Lahore on Thursday, officials say. At least seven people were killed in the battle - including police and attackers, officials said. A police spokesman said: "We found grenades and a suicide jacket near one dead person. Two dead bodies have been found near the front gate. The building has been cleared and the employees are safe." In March 2008, 21 people were killed in a suicide attack on the same FIA building. At least 11 people - including police officers and suspected militants - were killed in Thursday's assaults on the other security facilities in Lahore. One was the Manawan police training academy, where police said three of the attackers had blown themselves up. The other target was the Bedia police training centre. Fighting is reported to be continuing there. Kohat destruction Thursday's attack in Kohat saw a bomber ram his car into the wall of the police station compound, police said, causing part of the station to collapse with the impact.Eyewitnesses say that both civilians and policemen are among the dead. The BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Islamabad says that although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks there is a feeling that the militants are trying to seize the initiative. The finger of blame, our correspondent adds, will be pointed towards the Taliban, who just a couple of weeks ago had threatened a wave of attacks against security forces unless the army's operations against them came to an end. Lahore, the centre of Pakistan's cultural life and its most liberal major city, has seen a string of deadly attacks throughout 2009. In one of the most notable incidents, in March gunmen attacked the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team, killing six policemen. In June a prominent anti-Taliban cleric was killed by suicide bomber at his religious school. More than 100 people have died in a series of attacks across Pakistan in the past three weeks. These have included a raid by militants on the army headquarters in Rawalpindi at the weekend, in which at least 20 people were killed. About 40 people were taken hostage, until security forces stormed the compound. |
