Australia has responded positively, says Tharoor

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Australian government has positively responded to the Centre’s intervention on the attacks against Indian students in Australia, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor has said.

Addressing a meet-the-press of the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club here on Sunday, Mr. Tharoor said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna had contacted the Australian government and they were assured that Australia would take all steps to ensure the safety and security of the Indian students.

Australia would not do anything that would harm the prospects of its $1.5 billion education industry.

The Union government had intervened in time and there was no need for any concern. But the government had its limitations in intervening on issues relating to students in another country, he said.

The lack of educational facilities in the country was forcing students to go abroad for higher education. Mr. Tharoor stressed the need for developing the Capital a destination for education. He had already held consultations with ministries of Human Resource Development and Science and Technology for improving the educational facilities in the Capital. There were proposals to enhance facilities by setting up research institutes and those like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and IITs.
