US Senator Ted Kennedy's brain cancer is in remission, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said. Mr Reid said he had spoken to Mr Kennedy's wife, Vicki, who had said the senator was "doing fine", although he was undergoing a bout of treatment.Mr Kennedy, 77, the brother of former President John F Kennedy, was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008.He is set to lead Democratic efforts to push healthcare reform through Congress when he returns later this month. 'Lion' Since being diagnosed with a malignant glioma in May 2008 after suffering a seizure, Mr Kennedy has received chemotherapy and radiation.He suffered another seizure during President Barack Obama's inaugural lunch in January, but was released from hospital a day later. The father-of-five was elected to the US Senate as a Democrat in 1962 following the election of his brother as president.Dubbed "the Lion of the Senate", Mr Kennedy has been responsible for a number of landmark pieces of legislation in the US.His decision to back Barack Obama during last year's Democratic primaries was seen by many as a turning-point in the battle for the party's presidential nomination. |
