Kochi: Popular Front of India Kerala state committee filed a petition in Kerala High Court against ban on Freedom parade slated to be organised in four towns on August 15 as part of Independence Day celebrations. Petition will be heard tomorrow.
The petition moved through senior advocate K Ram Kumar against the decision of district collectors to impose ban on Freedom parade at Punaloor, Thamarassery, Manjeri and Chavakkadu. Petitioner questioned the veracity of reasons put forward by these collectors of four districts to put the ban that there were strong opposition from the part of organisations like RSS and CPM. At the same time all other parties were given permission to conduct various programmes on the same day.  To single out Popular Front and blocks its programme only is nothing but illogical and unlawful. The decision by the collectors amounts to the denial of citizens’ right to celebrate Indian independence, petition said.
Last day Populkar Front had termed official ban on Freedom Parade on Independence Day as gross violation of civil rights of the citizens to celebrate country’s freedom. Kerala state committee meeting termed the police decision highly condemnable and objectionable.
It should be noted that Freedom Parade was being conducted in different parts of Kerala right from 2004. And it was Freedom Parade that popularized Independence Day celebrations which was restricted to official programmes till then. High public participation of the parade was clear indication for this.
There was no untoward incident reported in connection with the parade so far in the state. So it is unreasonable and against facts to ban it on the grounds of law and order problems. The ban decision is no doubt the result of prejudiced notion of the government towards Popular Front of India. There is no point in denying Popular Front activists right to celebrate independence when all other organizations has chance to do it through various programmes, sate committee had observed.
