Lebanese security officials say two rockets have been fired from south Lebanon towards Israel. The rockets fell short of their target, landing in empty fields inside Lebanese territory close to the border. No one has claimed responsibility for Saturday's incident. The Israeli army confirmed that a rocket fired from southern Lebanon landed in northern Israel, injuring a woman slightly. Al Jazeera's Rula Amin, monitoring developments from Beirut, said it was the third time rockets had been fired from Lebanon into Israel since the military assault on the Gaza Strip. She said officials of Hezbollah, the Lebanese group, had told her that they did not need to issue a denial "because when they do something they usually claim responsibility" . "Small groups - Lebanese or Palestinian - may be responsible for the attacks," our correspondent said. Lebanese officials said that Israel retaliated by firing several shells in the vicinity of the Mansouri and al-Qulaila areas near Tyre, from where the rockets had been launched. The shelling led to panicked residents fleeing the border area, a correspondent for the AFP news agency said. UN peacekeeping troops set up checkpoints and prevented people from heading into the area, residents said. |
